New Mexico congresswoman asks EPA to set date for cleanup of 'Superfund' site near Socorro

A member of New Mexico’s congressional delegation has asked federal environmental officials to set a timeline for cleaning up a designated “Superfund” site in Socorro County.

The letter from U.S Rep. Yvette Herrell (R-2nd District) asks the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to prioritize planned remediation efforts at the former Eagle Picher Carefree Battery manufacturing facility two miles north of Socorro.

The request comes after the EPA in December announced plans to fund 49 cleanup projects…
