Leaky old oil and gas wells, no longer extracting resources from the ground, can be a big problem. They often spew noxious gases like methane into the atmosphere or harmful particles into surrounding groundwater. While many companies use cement to plug those unused wells, an Albuquerque startup spun a nanoparticle-based sealant technology out of the University of New Mexico to more effectively patch up leaky holes. And, more recently, the company landed a federal grant to spur the development of a new, more advanced sealant tech.
