Derek Gutierrez talks golf in New Mexico and his newest position as a director with PGA of America

Derek Gutierrez didn’t grow up playing golf like some who are heavily involved in the sport. In fact, he picked up the game when he took an introduction to golf class at the University of New Mexico in 1989.

How Gutierrez ended up in that class was a bit of a mistake. He originally signed up for a half-semester tennis class, but he showed up after the class had ended. Thankfully, he found a golf class instead, and within a couple of days “was absolutely hooked on the game,” he said.
