New distillery set to open Downtown

Chris Leurig worked for three months straight, earning minimal compensation while he learned how to become a craft distiller.

Since it was illegal to distill spirits at home, Leurig went to Dallas to learn the craft by working at a distillery after he finished up at the University of New Mexico. Now, Leurig, 29, is set to open Safe House Distilling Co. at 616 Gold Ave. SW in Downtown Albuquerque. Leurig and five other core employees make up the Safe House team, with Leurig being the master distiller.
